Granada earthquake: Cars crushed by falling masonry

Another powerful earthquake has rocked Granada in Spain - less than a week after a tremor rocked the tourist hotspot. Early estimates show the earthquake registering magnitude 4.6 on the Richter Scale, with its epicentre located around 8km south-west of Granada in Alhendin.

The tremor earlier this morning was reportedly felt across much of Andalucia, with hundreds of reports lodged from locations nearly 100 miles away, including on the Costa del Sol. A local resident told the Olive Press: "I am still shaking – I have guitars pinned to my wall and I could see them swinging. My sofa moved a couple of inches, the coffee table too. I would say it lasted 7-8 seconds, we’re now experiencing aftershocks but they are weak."

'Seismic aftershocks' warning

Andalusia's president, Juanma Moreno, wrote on X: "Once again, an earthquake shakes Granada. Maximum CAUTION.

"Experts point out that it is possible for seismic movements and aftershocks to continue in the area, and it is important to know how we should act in these situations.

"Let us follow the advice and maintain our composure, please."

How to survive an earthquake

Drop to your hands and knees, crawl under a sturdy desk or table for cover, and hold on tight to it until the shaking completely stops. Never run outside or stand in doorways during the tremor.

Indoors: Stay inside. Move away from windows, glass, and heavy hanging objects or tall furniture that could tip over.

In Bed: Stay there, turn face down, and cover your head and neck with a pillow.

Outdoors: Stay outside. Move away from buildings, streetlights, trees, and power lines, then drop and cover.

Driving: Pull over safely to the side of the road away from bridges, overpasses, and utility wires. Set the parking brake and stay inside the vehicle until shaking stops.

Granada located in active seismic zone

Granada sits in one of Spain's most active seismic zones because active fault lines run through the area. Most tremors are small, but the region occasionally experiences stronger, shallow quakes that shake buildings and cause minor damage, such as the 5.2-magnitude and 4.6-magnitude tremors recorded this month.

Historic palace evacuated

The Alhambra’s governing body evacuated the Nasrid Palaces and the Alcazaba so potential structural damage could be assessed following the earthquake. Tourists could still visit other parts of the palace, such as the Partal gardens and the Generalife.
