A British couple who died in a helicopter crash yesterday have been named. The newlyweds, Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, were on their honeymoon when the aircraft crashed near a heliport in Sifnos, Greece. It happened at approximately 6.15pm local time, according to reports. The pilot, Giorgos Raikos, who is understood to be very experienced, also died in the incident. The island's mayor, Maria Nadali, said what had happened was "shocking", adding that officials were "trying to manage, together with the right services, the consequences of this incident next to the helipad".

The deputy mayor of Sifnos, Manolis Fountoulakis, told NewsIT: 'There was nothing left, a shapeless mass, inside which the two charred bodies must have been. It experienced mechanical failure in the air, residents say it made a loud, strange noise, like military aircraft." The Foreign Office is in contact with Greek authorities and told The Daily Mail it was asking for more information.

CCTV has reportedly shown that the aircraft spinning uncontrollably and rapidly losing altitude before crashing.

Two firefighters in one fire engine initially attended the scene, along with a speed boat.
