A major fashion retailer has confirmed the closure of another of its UK stores. River Island, which has around 200 shops across the nation, is set to close its Sheffield city centre store next month, launching a closing-down sale for customers.

The branch, located at 15 The Moor, is scheduled to cease operations on September 1 and has slashed prices of selected items by 30% ahead of the closing date.

The chain has operated from The Moor since 2009, having previously traded from Sheffield’s Fargate.

According to Retail Gazette, a notice is displayed in the shop window, thanking customers for shopping at the store and directing them to River Island's website and the nearby branch at Meadowhall once the shop closes.

The closure comes as River Island continues to make changes to its UK estate following its securing of High Court approval for a major restructuring plan in August 2025.

The plans initially involved the closure of 33 stores and rent reductions across a further 71 locations. Oxford, Poole, Perth, Grimsby, Hereford, and Sutton Coldfield were among those impacted.

However, more further closures have been confirmed alongside its Sheffield shop. Its Oxford Street store in Swansea is also due to shut on September 12 and has launched a closing-down sale with discounts of up to 30%.

The Swansea branch had initially been among the locations where River Island was seeking reduced rents rather than an outright closure.

River Island’s rescue plan was approved by the High Court last summer after the retailer warned it could face insolvency without action to reduce its property costs and restructure the business.

Chief executive Ben Lewis said that, following approval of the plan, it gave River Island a “strong platform” to deliver its transformation strategy and better align its store estate with changing customer habits.
